Spots of particular significance
Thermal Water Springs
At Therma, a region between Mirina and Kornos, there are thermal water springs, the curative quality of which have been scientifically proven. More accurately, at this natural spa, the water gushes from 1200 meters depth, is drinkable, therapeutic and free from any chemical elements.
For centuries, even during the time of the Turkish dominion, the place operated as a natural ‘hamam’ and today it has been well organized, providing the visitor with full spa services, along with an extended range of supplementary body and facial treatments. Overall, the entire environment is by nature idyllic and provides a great opportunity for relaxation, spiritual and bodily rejuvenation.
The exotic desert of LimnosSand-dunes is about 1,5 kilometers away from Gomati and there has evolved a terrific forest of wild olive trees, followed by a beautiful sandy beach. We leave “Amothines” and move to the west, following the sign for Pachia Ammos. There the visitor faces a marvelous sight that only nature itself could create. For more than one kilometer, starting from the inner part of the mountain to the shore, the area is entirely covered by sand-dunes which overtime have stretched out and now encircle the wild olive trees. The entire image can only be compared to a tiny Sahara desert! There is nothing more compelling than watching these sand hills from above as the wind plays upon them, creating fantastic wavy depictions.
The second one presents the process of sponge-fishing and the processing of the sponges in the village. The exhibits here include diving equipment, components of sponge-fishing caiques, varieties of sponges and processing equipments.
The last one, displays the entire archeological collection of Nea Koutali, consisting of artifacts collected by sponge-fishers from the deep ocean.
Folklore museum of Portianos
Cooking utensils, tools, furniture, troughs, steelyards, pitchers and even an old bed with wedding dresses and embroided laces laid upon it are also on presentation which all help create an image of the island the way it used to be thousand years ago.
In the courtyard of the museum tools used for the cultivation of land and more specifically, for digging, threshing, winnowing and harvesting are exhibited.
Salt-marshes
The salt-marshes are semi-artificial seaside salt production units. Today the salt-marshes are considered to be extremely significant because they harmoniously combine the process of production and the sustainment of natural environment. The ecological value of salt-marshes is directly linked with organisms such as “artemia salin”, remarkable fodder for a wide range of birds which find there a niche. More specifically, certain bird species, totally depend on the productivity of the salt marshes and their concentration and quality of “artemia salina”. It is thanks to this substance that the flamingos have these beautiful orange-like colored wings.
