Local products
In ancient times the wine of Limnos was considered the nectar of the Olympian Gods. Vast areas of vineyards, gave grapes of high quality which after harvesting, pressing and fermentation, produced the renowned liquid, a true gift to mortals and gods.
The grapes of Limnos yield wine with high degrees of alcoholic volume and that is a corollary of both the volcanic rocks that lack calcium and the climatic conditions with the hot, dry summers and the few rainfalls.
The longest living variety of grape is the “Kalampaki” or “Limnio”, which has a small grape with many pips and is suitable only for wine production. The variety of the black “Kalampaki” has been dispersed in many parts of Greece, mainly though in Chalkidiki, from where it received its second name “Limnio”. “Moshato Alexandrias”, nicknamed by the Limnians as the “English”, has relatively few and big grapes.
The local vine culturists, loyal to european standards and technical specifications, aim to the highest quality product and so far, they have achieved it.
Traditional cultural elements
Vineyards and wine of LimnosThe wine-harvest season is without doubt one of the most joyful, given that all the residents on the island, by tradition, collect their grapes in what comes to be a feast. In the middle of September, depending on weather conditions, the vintage begins and has been traditionally performed by women. Later, follows the wine pressing, an activity undertaken solely by men.
The mood for collaboration and mutual assistance amid the members of the families, has fostered a spirit of voluntarism and a climate of joy, since they all gladly participated in harvesting, carrying and pressing the grapes. Actually, the entire image of the dwellers gathering around huge wine-presses at the center of the village, during harvest time, is quite similar to a scenery of “a peaceful war”.
The pressed grapes were stored in clay jars and on top of them were placed dried sea weeds in order to secure the necessary moisture. The jars were then sealed with a cap and straw-mud were buried for a period of about two months.
Every vine culturist unsealed his jar at the time he deemed appropriate, in order to produce the taste and colour of wine he desired. Another distinct and equally meritful moment was the time where all friends and relatives gathered to taste the new wine crop. For the transportation of wine from the presses to the peoples’ houses, they used to decant it into small barrels with the use of big pitchers, called “sourlades” made in the traditional cooking-pots at Kotsinas.
After, when the wine has been fermented twice and distilled, we get the famous “tsipouro” or “raki”. However, in order to obtain an exquisite sweet taste and scent the people added raisins, figs, corn, wheat, honey, masticha and aniseed.

Around Mirina
In October 8th, 1912 at the ‘’Romaic shoreline’’ and under the imposing presence of the castle of Mirina, the Greek battleship Averof set ashore its men in order to exact the surrender of the island to the Greek Fleet.
The fleet, anchored at the Bay of Moudros, and under the command of Kountouriotis had already liberated most of the islands of north and east Aegean, consolidating thus, the Greek dominion at sea.
The castle of Mirina is picturesque and adds to the magical scenery. Despite the uphill climb to reach the castle, the walk itself is not very steep for the visitor and is well-worth the effort. The path taken is quite interesting and surprising given that the visitor will enjoy the company of deers playing joyfully around the fortifications of the castle.
Spots of particular significance
Thermal Water Springs
At Therma, a region between Mirina and Kornos, there are thermal water springs, the curative quality of which have been scientifically proven. More accurately, at this natural spa, the water gushes from 1200 meters depth, is drinkable, therapeutic and free from any chemical elements.
For centuries, even during the time of the Turkish dominion, the place operated as a natural ‘hamam’ and today it has been well organized, providing the visitor with full spa services, along with an extended range of supplementary body and facial treatments. Overall, the entire environment is by nature idyllic and provides a great opportunity for relaxation, spiritual and bodily rejuvenation.
The exotic desert of LimnosSand-dunes is about 1,5 kilometers away from Gomati and there has evolved a terrific forest of wild olive trees, followed by a beautiful sandy beach. We leave “Amothines” and move to the west, following the sign for Pachia Ammos. There the visitor faces a marvelous sight that only nature itself could create. For more than one kilometer, starting from the inner part of the mountain to the shore, the area is entirely covered by sand-dunes which overtime have stretched out and now encircle the wild olive trees. The entire image can only be compared to a tiny Sahara desert! There is nothing more compelling than watching these sand hills from above as the wind plays upon them, creating fantastic wavy depictions.
